Tectonic Plates near B.C (Grade 5)

Students must gain an awareness and understanding of plate tectonics in their local area.

Introduction

Introduce the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift.

Materials

  • Map of Juan de Fuca Plate
  • Internet access

Activity

Use the following map of the Juan de Fuca Plate as a base map to introduce students to tectonics. Discuss the various types of tectonic boundaries and their relative plate movement. After the discussion ask students to look online at www.neptunecanada.ca to determine the relative movement of the plates and then ask the students to add this too their map. Ask students to then label the map with the name of the appropriate plate boundary.

Extension

  • Discuss what the environment would be like at each of the boundaries.

Assessment

  • Do they correctly label their map?
  • Do they demonstrate an understanding of tectonics by their contribution to class discussions?
