The Barkley Canyon Axis instrument platform is also known as "Barkley Benthic Pod 1". It is connected by a 1430m-long extension cable to the Barkley Hydrates instrument platform.
This platform is positioned in the axis of Barkley Canyon, which is a very active location in geologic terms. Sedimentation rates are very rapid, and underwater videos of the platform location show a constant "snow" of sediment falling to the seafloor. Also, at certain times of year, upwelling events can cause water from the deep ocean to be forced upward through the canyon toward the surface.
Additionally, this area is subject to slope failures, which can send large amounts of sediment rolling down the canyon like an undersea avalanche. Such an event might bury or destroy the platform, but the data gathered at the time would be invaluable to scientists.
Connected to Barkley Slope/Canyon node on 26 Jul 2009 from the CCGS Tully.
